A Fresh Start for Lockwood.

Hello, I am Ginny Clarke, the new manager of Lockwood donkey centre and I would like to introduce myself and tell you a bit about our future plans for Lockwood Donkey Centre.
Before I came to Lockwood I was working on a voluntary basis as manager for Alexandra Bastedo at her privately run ABC animal sanctuary in West Sussex. At Alexandra’s, we had a huge variety of animals including Shetland and Welsh ponies and of course, donkeys! I had a lot of fun working with Alexandra, gained valuable experience, and through her learned a great deal about the special requirements of elderly donkeys.

Although I had worked with and owned horses for many years, even breeding Highland Ponies in Australia, my equine experience could not prepare me for the emotional impact that the care and welfare of donkeys had on me. My respect for these unique, sensitive and affectionate creatures grew more intense the more I had to do with them, so when I saw the position of Manager for the Lockwood Donkey centre in the local paper I knew it was the job for me.

Although we intend to maintain our status as a sanctuary for these special and unique animals, we are also expanding our horizons and are very excited to be developing Lockwood’s facilities to become an RSPCA equine rescue and rehabilitation centre for not only donkeys but ponies and horses as well. Much of Lockwood’s current buildings and stables need to be rebuilt and refurbished to bring them up to modern standards but it is very rewarding and exciting to be a part of this project as it develops.
